They say memories tied to sound aren’t just recalled…they’re relived. A few sounds can do what entire conversations cannot. Sonic imprints sneak in as they don't require your focus, they pull you out of the present time before you can see them coming!
What sounds bring you to your calm? What sounds bring you back in time? I'd like to take a few moments to speak about what sounds are most calming for me. At the top of my list is - as in the picture, the sounds of leaves rustling from poplar trees blowing in the breeze. Growing up at my dads house, we had our lot semi boxed in with tall poplar trees that always gave an ideal alternative to the sound of ocean waves rolling in. I suppose too it helped that back then we didn't have central cooling so our windows would be open on those breezy summer days. Cicadas would join in the sounds too if it was a hot day. We were fairly far from any serious road/traffic noise so the trees and insects were largely uninterrupted.
Well, except for when a VIA Rail train went by. We had rail road tracks in our back yard behind the back row of trees. But that didn't interrupt things for long and I'd say maybe went by (that I noticed) maybe twice a day.
Okay- I suppose there was another form of transportation which also added to the pleasant side of the sounds. We also lived by the Ottawa International Airport, and I can to this day remember taking naps (when I was the age where you regularly took those) at home- lulled to sleep by the sound of the rumble of a small prop plane passing by. And surely there were many prop planes as well as commercial jets coming and going.
The other side of the calming sounds I mentioned in another post, but the electronic hum of old tech like IBM Selectric typewriters and Xerox photocopy machines.
